  • the commodification of friendship is the most annoying thing to come out of the internet in ages. like actually i love to break this to you but you're supposed to help your friends move even if it's hard work. or stay up with them when they're sad even if you're gonna lose sleep. you're supposed to listen to their fears and sorrows even if it means your own mind takes on a little bit of that weight. that's how you know that you care. they will drive you to the airport and then you will make them soup when they're sick. you're supposed to make small sacrifices for them and they are supposed to do that for you. and there's actually gonna be rough patches for both of you where the balance will be uneven and you will still be friends and it will not be unhealthy and they will not be abusive. life is not meant to be an endless prioritization of our own comfort if it was we would literally never get anywhere ever. jesus.

  • The same year the UK government decides to override the Scottish Parliament. Wouldn't it be a SHAME if that had consequences

  • The UK supreme court unanimously voted to crush this referendum.

Which makes sense, since the UK supreme court has always been the ultimate proof that the """"united kingdom"""" is, in fact, southern England and her most tightly clutched colonies.

That'd be why they also do things like:

Tell Scots that they will be legally required to mimic the worst conservative bigotry out of England. Because they are told outright that their court case will be ruled against them in advance.

Tell Scottish teachers that they're too expensive, and should instead simply starve to death for the welfare of Scottish children. In spite of the Scottish government approving the increased pay and benefits; they are being overruled by the colonial power to the south.

Scottish hospitals continue to be overwhelmed as the colonizers continue to push their dual "no more healthcare for you" and "covid is fake" scams.

The UK, I cannot emphasize this enough, consists of the English government foisting increasingly deranged nonsense onto the captive populations of Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland (as well as, of course, harming their own impoverished of marginalized English people).

  • I think another good thing I came to realize was that, in therapy, "acceptance" doesn't mean that something is okay or good. To accept a situation or emotion means to understand that any amount of wishing it didnt happen, pretending it isn't happening, or regressing into maladaptive coping mechanisms will not effectively deal with what's going on. To accept is to acknowledge, to understand what is happening or what you're feeling and cope appropriately and healthily without self-judgement.

  • I might be a little biased but I’m honestly starting to believe that there’s no purer form of love than the defensive spite you see from biologists that have devoted their life to the study of a maligned or misunderstood species. For example:

The hyena biologist that arranged for Disney animators to come sketch captive  hyenas for The Lion King film (Laurence Frank) was so incensed when the animals were depicted as villains in the movie that he later included boycotting the film on a list of ways the average person could help hyena conservation.

Though it’s commonly known that Charles Darwin’s distaste for parasitic wasps played a role in his development of evolution theory (since he felt no loving God would create animals with such a disturbing life cycle), the biologists who study these wasps find it an unfair characterization. When they were tasked with coming up with a common name for the family of parasitic wasps (Ichneumonidae) that old Charles so disliked, they proposed the name “Darwin Wasps” to spite the famous naturalist who had insulted their beloved family of insects.

Parasitologist Tommy Leung was so frustrated with the way people write about parasites to evoke horror and gore that he started writing a Parasite of the Day blog, that specifically avoids inflammatory or unsettling language to describe them. He also illustrates different species in colorful anime art on Twitter in a series called Parasite Monster Girls—which he calls his “love letter to parasites.”

I guess I’m just saying that if you’re a biologist studying an unpopular species and you have a little bit of a chip on your shoulder about it you can always count on me to be in your corner if you want to get a little petty with the public!

  • One of what, in my opinion, is the funniest reaction to glass onion is people seeing Hugh Grant answer the door and thinking. Ah yes. Benoit Blanc is married to Hugh Grant. Not Hugh Grant's character, but Hugh Grant himself.

And then they are utterly awestruck when in the captions on Netflix he is referred to as "Phillip" and not real life person Hugh Grant

  • Are Hercules and Beowulf and Superman and so forth *really* just manifestations of some timeless archetypal form nested deep in the implicate order of the order of the human psyche? Or are they rather, as I suspect, the products of various people living in various times and places independently thinking, "You know what would be cool? If a guy was really, really STRONG."

  • I'm watching Glass Onion and my first thought upon seeing the eponymous dome is that I will be sorely disappointed if that thing doesn't shatter.

  • Today I introduced my sister to “the problem of Susan” and I had to explain to her that Susan was left out of Narnia cuz she liked boys and lipstick now and without missing a beat she said but what about Peter? Does Peter not like girls? And I knew she was pointing out the inherent misogyny at the center of the “the problem of Susan” but the implications of that question are a source of much hilarity to meeee LMFAO like Does Peter not like girls? Does he like boys? Is he Gay? Is Narnia really just a homo-utopia where Lucy is also a lesbian and Edmund is a bisexual disaster and Susan was kicked out cuz she was too straight??? Can I make CS Lewis turn over in his grave with this new reading?
